Solar Arrays & Mechanisms

Solar Arrays

We design and manufacture deployable solar arrays for 20–200 kg satellites, with compact, lightweight designs tailored to your spacecraft and mission requirements. Integration and testing are considered from the outset, with practical support through development and delivery.

Mechanisms

We design and manufacture spacecraft mechanisms to move, release or detach hardware. Each design addresses your mission’s interfaces, constraints and test requirements, with a focus on reliable performance and practical integration.

Company Ethos

Designed With Test In Mind

Our hardware is shaped by direct experience of design, integration and test. Whatever the model philosophy, we consider the applicable test route from the outset and make sure it addresses the situations the customer needs to de-risk.

Practical Support

Even well designed hardware can meet unexpected issues. We stay close to the customer through development and delivery, providing clear advice and practical support when it is needed.

Reliable Outcomes

We value satisfied customers, working products and dependable performance on orbit. The aim is straightforward: hardware that does what it was designed to do, supported by innovative and well considered engineering.

About Us

2 Quintillion was founded by Dr James Buckle with a vision for focused, practical hardware development: well considered detailed designs, clear test strategy, and full support through the process of qualification testing, hardware delivery, and integration. The core aim of 2 Quintillion is to aid customers in putting reliable products in orbit without unnecessary complexity and risk. Based in Glasgow (Scotland), 2 Quintillion prioritises the use of European suppliers, and focuses on hardware assembly in the UK.

James leads 2 Quintillion, with two decades of experience in engineering within academia and industry. He is a multidisciplinary engineer with specialisms in low TRL research, spacecraft hardware, solar array and mechanism design and test for missions up to 200 kg, with tens of successful designs carrying flight heritage.

Prior to founding 2 Quintillion, he studied for an MEng in Integrated Engineering and a PhD in Robotics from the University of Liverpool. His career to date has included post-doctoral research with a number of publications, senior engineering and design authority roles at AAC Clyde Space, and at ESA's ESTEC facility in the Electrical Power Generation section.
